Composed of 99.93% silver, weighing 31.01 grams, and containing exactly one ounce of silver, this is the largest and heaviest U.S. silver coin ever minted. The United States began minting these one-ounce silver coins in 1986, using a patriotic design originally created for the U.S. half dollar in 1916, as America prepared to enter World War I.   The obverse shows Lady Liberty striding toward the rising sun, wearing a gown which consists of a swirling, billowing American Flag. On the reverse is a classic rendition of the American eagle, holding a sheaf of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Streaming from its beak is a ribbon with the motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” which means, “Out of Many, One.” Above the eagle are thirteen stars representing the original colonies.
